About us
Through our National Collections and Marine Infrastructure (NCMI) business unit we manage collections of plants and animals of Australian and international significance, host and contribute to the Atlas of Living Australia, manage the Environomics Future Science Platform and host the Marine National Facility on behalf of Australia. Together they provide vital resources for research that delivers evidence-based support for biosecurity, conservation and the development of sustainable land and marine management systems.
Our core business is delivering science-ready platforms that are used by researchers, industry partners and the public around the world to understand and manage biodiversity and the marine environment.
Collections, facilities and science platforms
The Atlas of Living Australia
The program integrates Australia's biodiversity information and provides free online access. It includes a variety of tools for visualising, mapping, and analysing biodiversity data to enable decision making and informed policy development for conservation and environmental management.
Engineering and Technology
This program provides scientific capability that enables multi‑disciplinary marine research. E&T develops key science and observation systems, digital products and tools for the Australian marine research community and commercial partners.
Environomics Future Science Platform
The platform uses unique genomics technologies to solve environmental management and biological resource‑use challenges, from fast species mapping, to monitoring environmental health, to finding useful compounds in nature.
Marine National Facility
The program is critical blue-water research infrastructure. Research Vessel Investigator and other facility infrastructure enable advances in marine and atmospheric research, including improved weather prediction, sustainable harvest of commercial fish species, and geological mapping of Australia’s Exclusive Economic Zone.
National Research Collections Australia
NRCA is natural history infrastructure that conducts research in core taxonomy, biosecurity, biodiversity management, environmental monitoring, and development of new resources for agriculture, fisheries and forestry. Three of the collections – the Australian National Insect Collection, Australian National Herbarium and Australian National Wildlife Collection are gazetted by the Australian government.
