The Australian Centre for Disease Preparedness provides Australia’s highest level of biocontainment within a purpose-built biosecurity infrastructure. Our infrastructure, programs, people and partners, and their expertise, help to protect Australia’s economy and environment, and the health and social wellbeing of our nation.

ACDP infrastructure

Engineering underpinning the science

The Australian Centre for Disease Preparedness (ACDP) has been built on a box-within-a-box principle, all physical containment systems are duplicated or triplicated to ensure there is always another barrier in place should one barrier fail.

PC4 Zoonosis Suite

The PC4 Zoonosis Suite is the most sophisticated high containment laboratory in the world, enabling collaborative research into the most lethal diseases.

Diagnostic emergency response laboratory

The Diagnostic Emergency Response Laboratory is a high throughput diagnostic laboratory, designed to handle up to 10 000 samples a day in outbreak mode.

Insectary

Insects can be studied within both the Australian Centre for Disease Preparedness PC3 and PC4 spaces enabling research on a variety of vector-borne diseases that affect animals and people.

Large animal facility

ACDP contains facilities enabling work on infected livestock at Physical Containment level 4 (PC4). This capability further strengthens our ability to protect Australia's animal and people from disease outbreaks.

History of ACDP, formerly AAHL

Officially opened in 1985, the Australian Centre for Disease Preparedness (ACDP), (formerly the Australian Animal Health Laboratory, AAHL) was built to help protect Australia's multi-billion dollar livestock and aquaculture industries, and the general public, from emergency and zoonotic disease threats.

Visiting ACDP

As a national facility dedicated to biosecurity, all visitors to the Australian Centre for Disease Preparedness (ACDP) (formerly the Australian Animal Health Laboratory (AAHL)) must be pre-approved and bring the required photo identification. If you have an organised visit, we look forward to welcoming you.
