Australia's future workforce

Employer demand for graduates with STEM qualifications and skills is on the rise and will continue to increase as job roles diversify.

It is predicted that in coming years approximately 75 per cent of all new jobs will require STEM skills.

The Office of the Chief Scientist has recently published the report 2020 Australia's STEM Workforce. Building on the 2016 report, the second Australia's STEM Workforce report once again provides a comprehensive analysis of Australia's Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) trained workforce.

CSIRO Education and Outreach offer a variety of programs to support students interested in STEM study and career pathways.

Our programs

Generation STEM

Generation STEM is a 10-year investment into the development and retention of science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) skills in New South Wales.

Virtual work experience

Are you a high school student in Year 10 or 11? You can gain experience of CSIRO's research in science or engineering by doing virtual work experience with CSIRO.

Indigenous STEM Education Project

The Indigenous STEM Education Project aims to increase participation of Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander students in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM).

Young Indigenous Women's STEM Academy

The Young Indigenous Women's STEM Academy gives young Indigenous women the tools and support they need to succeed in an exciting career in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM).

Digital Careers

Digital Careers supports teachers and encourages students’ understanding of digital technologies and the foundational skills they require in an ever-changing workforce.

Undergraduate Research Opportunities Program

In January 2020, CSIRO Education and Outreach assumed responsibility for administering the Undergraduate Research Opportunities Program (UROP). UROP facilitates Victorian undergraduate students with paid work placements in research organisations within the biomedical industry.
